Every journey has a beginning, a single moment where a spark catches and changes the course of a lifetime. For me, that spark was the gift from my DAD the Manic Miner game on the ZX Spectrum 48K.
It wasn't just a game; it was an awakening. Watching those pixelated rooms, dodging Willy’s surreal obstacles, and listening to the rhythmic, single-channel bleeps of the computer, I wasn't just playing—I was mesmerized. The sheer magic of pressing a key and seeing an immediate, digital reaction on the screen completely captured my imagination.
That 1983 classic did much more than provide hours of platforming frustration and triumph. It planted a deep, permanent love for computers that has stayed with me for my entire life. It made me look past the screen and ask the ultimate question: How does this work, and how can I build it myself?
Fueled by the desire to recreate that magic, Manic Miner inspired me to dive into the world of making games, figuring out mechanics, and understanding hardware. That childhood fascination ultimately paved my path toward studying engineering, turning a gaming passion into a lifelong profession.
Decades later, the technology has changed, the screens have millions of more colors, and the processors are infinitely faster—but the core passion remains exactly the same. It all started with a miner named Willy, 20 cavernous rooms, and the endless possibilities of a microcomputer.
The Golden Era of Tech: Open Source, AI, and Reclaiming the Magic
The beautiful thing about the world we live in today is that the distance between a childhood dream and reality has completely collapsed. Decades ago, we looked at microcomputers with a sense of pure wonder. Today, that wonder is amplified by Linux, open source, and artificial intelligence—tools that democratize technology and allow us to share our deepest passions with the entire world.
There is no better proof of this than the incredible global open-source community. An example is the work of David Crespo Tascón David Crespo on Github. Driven by that exact same pure, retro-fueled nostalgia, David used open-source web technologies to build an almost complete HTML5/JavaScript remake of the classic Manic Miner.
